Deeply etched frown lines, creases and wrinkles can give you a prematurely aged look. If you don’t feel inclined to get a facelift, you might consider a less invasive but very effective treatment for wrinkles and ageing skin: wrinkle injections.

Wrinkle injections are one of the most often performed and popular skin rejuvenation treatments and can work wonders to revitalise and rejuvenate the look of your facial skin!

What types of wrinkles can be treated?

Wrinkle injections have a protein made by a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. It works as a muscle relaxant and is often used for cosmetic types of facial enhancement, especially problems such as crow’s feet, frown lines you may have developed between your eyebrows and the very common worry lines on your forehead.

How do wrinkle injections work?

This treatment blocks the nerve stimulation to your muscles that cause wrinkling and this in turn prevents muscles from contracting. This greatly reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and can help towards reducing the formation of new wrinkles.

Just a few very small injections are given just beneath your skin to lessen nerve stimulation to the muscles targeted. This procedure normally takes  about 10 minutes, but the time might vary depending on how many areas you are having treated. Since men, as a rule have stronger, larger muscles, they may need more injections to get the results they want.

Is the treatment painful?

In most cases, no anaesthetic is used or needed. The needles used for wrinkle injections are exceedingly small. Plus, a very small amount of the product is injected, meaning that the whole procedure typically causes only a very mild discomfort. If you are concerned about the pain your skin can be numbed over the areas being treated before treatment.

How will I feel and how long before I see results?

An effect of injectable cosmetic treatments for lines on your forehead is that ultimately, you might be unable to frown. But, this is temporary.

After a few days the muscles begin to relax and it usually will take 3-6 days for the results to become apparent. Over time, the effects will wear off, so if you want to maintain your results, plan on getting more injections very 3 to 5 months.

Are there any serious side effects?

Side effects usually consist of a small amount of redness or bruising to your skin at the injection site/s, which is only temporary. Additionally, although the risk is very slight, it is possible that you might develop temporary weakness in muscles adjacent to the injection site, causing your eyelid or eyebrow to droop slightly. If this happens, the effects are gone after 1-6 weeks. You may have a slight headache or feel queasy for a short while after the treatment.

Who shouldn’t have wrinkle injections?

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, these injections are not recommended. Avoiding aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs or blood thinners before the procedure unless your doctor says you have to take them, for 2 weeks before the treatment will minimise the risk of bruising.
