What is Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT)?
To begin the treatment, which in nature is tailored to the individual, it is essential that you are consulted by one of our skilled and knowledgeable therapists. The purpose of this 45 minute session is to uncover any potential textural issues with your skin that you would like to improve upon.
It’s no secret that for all of us overall beauty and wellbeing is enormously important. The texture of our skin is a major area that we must focus on to strengthen these vital pillars of a happy and healthy life! So, what exactly are textural skin issues? Well some common examples of textural skin issues are;
- Lip Lines
- Sun Damage
- Oversized Pores
- Under Eye Lines
- ‘Crepey’ Skin
The unfortunate truth is that these are common skin issues almost all of us will face at some point in life – the good news, however, is they are all treatable using a Dermapen skin needling treatment or as it is sometimes referred to, collagen induction therapy.
This kind of treatment can also be used to treat some other skin conditions such as pigmentation and melasma.
You are probably curious as to how the treatment actually works, and maybe you are thinking it sounds like a long, daunting and lethargic process. There is more good news… It’s not!
The treatment is largely pain free, so there’s no need to feel anxious about giving it a try. In three sessions of 30 minutes a Dermapen is applied to each individual area of your face. The Dermapen is lubricated with a water-loving hyaluronic balm to achieve the maximum level of comfort throughout the duration of the treatment. The way a Dermapen works is a system of tiny needles that oscillate in and out of the skin at lightening quick speed.
The key benefit you can expect to see post-treatment is a far greater penetration of your existing active skin care efforts. You will not have to cease your use of typical topical agents (such as retinol and resurfacing acids), in fact these agents are encouraged, however it is best to hold off on these treatments for a few days after your skin needling treatment as there is a level of increased skin sensitivity to be expected.
There is no need to take any time away from regular activities post treatment and you can apply makeup normally and return to work or other responsibilities immediately.
For the best results, it is recommended that you undertake between 4 and 8 sessions with a gap of 4 weeks between each treatment. However, this can vary on a case by case basis and it is important that you consult with your practitioner to develop a more tailored treatment plan.
How does Collagen Induction Therapy actually work?
In order to understand how Collagen Induction Therapy works you need to understand how and why the skin produces collagen. The reason why our skin tends to lose its resilience and become thinner as we age is inherently linked to the reduced levels of collagen and elastin in the skin as we get older. Collagen is the key to the regenerative properties of the skin – our skin has an incredible ability to heal itself. When our skin is damaged, we produce collagen to regenerate and repair that damage. Collagen induction therapy aims to enhance collagen production to improve the overall and inherent health of the skin.
As the Dermapen, with its tiny needles, penetrates the skin and causes tiny openings in the skin to mimic wounds or skin damage. Don’t worry, this process is in no way harmful to the skin, in fact it mimics real damage and stimulates the production of collagen as our skin goes about repairing the tiny openings made by the Dermapen. What the Dermapen does in simple terms is to trick the skin in creating collagen and new skin cells, which as we know are heavily linked to healthier and younger looking skin.
As the skin heals it becomes smoother and more youthful, and as the treatment is repeated there is a visible reduction in textural skin issues. The increased collagen production rapidly heals and reverses skin imperfections.
It should be noted that not all of these results are instantaneous. Depending on your skin issue, you will need repeated sessions to fully repair and restore your skin.
What are the immediate effects of Collagen Induction Therapy?
You should not expect to experience any major discomfort in the few days prior to your treatment. What is commonly experience is slight redness and in extreme cases light swelling on the day of the treatment. However, don’t worry. You can easily mask these side effects using makeup or tinted sunscreen.
